Ministry of Construction make efforts for Mekong Delta

In June 18, at Ho Chi Minh City, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc chaired a conference to evaluate the results of the two-year implementation of the Government's Resolution 120/NQ-CP on sustainable development of the Delta Mekong River adapting to climate change (CC).

Minister of Construction Pham Hong Ha at the Conference

Reported at the Conference, Minister Pham Hong Ha said: “Right after the Government issued Resolution No. 120/NQ-CP, the Ministry of Construction (MOC) has developed and issued the Action Plan of the Ministry of Construction to develop implementing Resolution 120 with 9 groups of specific tasks and solutions. At the same time, MOC coordinated with localities in the region in implementing Resolution 120/NQ-CP”.

The average rate of urban population supplied with clean water is about 89.6%, higher than the national average (about 86%). Currently, the Ministry of Construction is implementing the technical assistance project "Preparing the safe water supply project in the Mekong Delta" funded by the WB to set up a water supply investment project to meet the needs of domestic and production water for the southwest provinces to 2025 and 2030.

The total volume of urban solid waste in the whole region is collected about 4,300 tons/day, reaching 78% of the total amount of solid waste generated. In the whole region, there are about 10 concentrated solid waste treatment plants in operation, the total designed capacity meets about 30% of the solid waste generated.

The urbanization rate has increased, urban quality in the region has been gradually improved, ensuring better living conditions for people. The whole region currently has 169 urban areas, including: 02 grade I cities, 9 grade II urban centers, 8 urban centers of grade III, 26 urban centers of grades IV and 124 grade-V urban centers. The region's urbanization rate reached over 27.2%, increasing by 0.7% compared to 2017.

However, Minister Pham Hong Ha also expressed "The urbanization rate and the urbanization rate of the region are much lower than the national average. The technical infrastructure system is weak and inconsistent; The collection and treatment of solid waste, waste water treatment have not had many changes and most are still using outdated technologies. The implementation of housing support for the policy beneficiaries in the Mekong Delta is still slow compared to the proposed plan”.

In order to fulfill the task, Minister Pham Hong Ha has proposed to the Government and the Prime Minister specific contents in which the Prime Minister should assign the Ministry of Construction to coordinate with localities to develop a safe housing development project to adapt for both flooding, landslides and droughts and saline intrusion.
