Những con số và kỷ lục ra đời từ kết quả Oscar 2018

Với thắng lợi của Coco tại Phim hoạt hình xuất sắc năm nay, xưởng Pixar đã giành tới 9 tượng vàng trong lịch sử 17 năm của hạng mục, tức đạt tỷ lệ trên 50%.

Roger Deakins từng chia sẻ kỷ lục buồn với George J. Folsey khi 13 lần nhận đề cử Quay phim xuất sắc mà không lần nào ra về với tượng vàng. Cái dớp đen đủi của Deakins rốt cuộc đã chấm dứt vào năm nay ở lần nhận đề cử thứ 14 với Blade Runner 2049. Giờ thì chỉ còn lại mình Folsey, nhưng tay máy huyền thoại không còn cơ hội chấm dứt “hạn đen” tại Oscar bởi ông đã qua đời từ năm 1988.

James Ivory trở thành chủ nhân tượng vàng Oscar già nhất trong lịch sử khi được gọi tên ở hạng mục Kịch bản chuyển thể xuất sắc với Call Me by Your Name. Agnès Varda cũng 88 tuổi, nhưng sinh trước Ivory 8 ngày. Tuy nhiên, năm nay, bà chỉ nhận giải Oscar danh dự. Nhà làm phim huyền thoại cùng với Faces Places chịu thua trước Icarus ở hạng mục Phim tài liệu xuất sắc.

Jordan Peele là nhà biên kịch người Mỹ gốc Phi đầu tiên giành giải Kịch bản gốc xuất sắc. Trong quá khứ, mới chỉ có ba người giống anh từng nhận đề cử ở hạng mục là Suzanne de Passe (Lady Sings the Blues), Spike Lee (Do the Right Things) và John Singleton (Boyz n the Hood).

A Fantastic Woman đánh dấu chiến thắng đầu tiên ở hạng mục Phim nói tiếng nước ngoài tại Oscar của điện ảnh Chile. Đây là lần thứ hai quốc gia Nam Mỹ lọt vào vòng đề cử cuối cùng. Lần trước, đạo diễn Pablo Larrain thi tài với No (2012) nhưng thất bại. Tuy nhiên, cá nhân Larrain chính là một trong những nhà sản xuất của A Fantastic Woman. Đây là tác phẩm xoay quanh nhân vật chính là một phụ nữ chuyển giới, và do một diễn viên chuyển giới - Daniela Vega - thể hiện.

Giành tượng vàng ở tuổi 60, Frances McDormand là người già thứ 9 trong lịch sử từng lên ngôi Nữ diễn viên chính xuất sắc của Oscar. Chị cũng trở thành người thứ 14 có hai chiến thắng ở hạng mục này trong sự nghiệp, sau Katharine Hepburn, Ingrid Bergman, Bette Davis, Olivia de Havilland, Sally Field, Jane Fonda, Jodie Foster, Glenda Jackson, Vivien Leigh, Luise Rainer, Meryl Streep, Hilary Swank, và Elizabeth Taylor.

Lần ẵm tượng vàng đầu tiên của Frances McDormand đến vào năm 1997 với bộ phim hình sự Fargo (1996), tức cách đây 21 năm. Tuy nhiên, khoảng cách thời gian giữa hai chiến thắng ấy không phải là dài nhất. Helen Hayes phải chờ tới 39 năm giữa The Sins of Madelon Claudet (1931) và Airport (1970). Katherine Hepburn từng đợi 34 năm giữa Morning Glory (1933) và Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner (1967). Hay ngay như huyền thoại Meryl Streep nhiều đề cử là vậy, nhưng đã phải chờ suốt 29 năm giữa Sophie’s Choice (1982) và The Iron Lady (2011).

Nhờ The Shape of Water, Guillermo del Toro trở thành nhà làm phim người Latin thứ ba nhận giải Đạo diễn xuất sắc, sau Alfonso Cuarón (Gravity) và Alejandro González Inã́rritu (hai lần với Birdman và The Revenant). Họ thường được gọi là nhóm “Ba người bạn” (Three Amigos) đến từ Mexico, và đã thống trị hạng mục dành cho các đạo diễn trong 4 năm trở lại đây. Năm gần nhất mà các nhà làm phim quốc gia Trung Mỹ không đoạt giải là 2013 khi Lý An nhận tượng vàng nhờ Life of Pi (2012).

Warren Beatty và Faye Dunaway - bộ đôi của Bonnie & Clyde (1967) - trở lại để công bố giải Phim truyện xuất sắc dành cho The Shape of Water sau sự cố đáng buồn La La Land / Moonlight hồi đầu năm 2017. Họ mới là người thứ tư và thứ năm có vinh dự ấy trong vòng hai năm liên tiếp kể từ khi lễ trao giải Oscar được phát sóng trực tiếp, sau Eric Johnson (1946, 1947), James Cagney (1950, 1951), và Jack Nicholson (1977, 1978). Nếu tính về tổng số lần được Viện hàn lâm giao cho trọng trách cao quý, Nicholson vẫn là “nhà vô địch” với 8 lần công bố tên tác phẩm thắng giải quan trọng nhất (lần gần nhất là Argo hồi 2013).

The Shape of Water được xem là bộ phim quái vật đầu tiên trong lịch sử Oscar thắng giải Phim truyện xuất sắc. Đây cũng là tác phẩm đầu tiên thắng giải Sư tử vàng tại Liên hoan phim Venice, rồi sau đó được Viện hàn lâm Khoa học và Nghệ thuật Điện ảnh Mỹ tiếp tục trao cho giải thưởng cao quý nhất.
