Soft Bank demonstrated 'Smart Highway' in Japan

Japanese telecommunication giant SoftBank and its subsidiary WCP announced April 12 that they experimented 'Smart Highway' using 5G wireless system at a toll road in Aichi Prefecture.

With latest information technologies such as IoT and artificial intelligence, the companies demonstrated monitoring of defects of bridges and traffic obstacles at an interchange. Engineering consulting firm Pacific Consultants and contractor Maeda Corp. participated in the experiments.

When the system is put into a practical use, damages of bridges can be detected remotely when a natural disaster occurs. As the sensor installed at the bridge pier or girder detects a slight vibration, the data will be transmitted to a 5G wireless receiver which was newly developed by the companies. The system can also provide accurate traffic information to drivers.
